Leadership Is Fundamental
Your MSP company must have top-tier leadership. If you don’t have the right kind of leadership, it doesn’t matter how effective your products or services are; it’s like walking on fire with socks. The fire will burn through the thin fabric and burn you. You need solid shoes, or you can’t make it across the hot ground of profit.
Tips to Hone Leadership Skills
There are a lot of toxic mistakes leaders make in small businesses. This is especially true with MSPs, which often have individuals in leadership that have little to no leadership skills. Following, we’ll briefly go over three common leadership mistakes to help give you an idea of what to avoid:
Don’t Tell Them How to Do Their Jobs–Even If They Need Telling
An MSP company needs to avoid leadership strategies which continuously inform personnel of what they’re doing and how to do it. Granted, sometimes they need a refresher, but put yourself in their shoes. Do you like being told “you’re doing it wrong!” a thousand times? A better way to handle this is to let them make mistakes, then guide them through proper procedures when they themselves acknowledge the issue–if this is operationally feasible, of course.
Employees Should Branch Out into Multiple Areas, Not Specialize in Just One
If you make employees an expert in only one area, you limit them from other growth possibilities. This will make them less comfortable in their position and could lead them to seek employment elsewhere. If a worker wants to branch out internally, let them.
Be Flexible About Allocating Hours to Employees
Your hours may not be the best for personnel. If you can be flexible here, you should be. Whatever choice you can give employees pertaining to their hours, you should give them. This will avoid a lot of unnecessary resentment.
Your MSP company will have different issues as it progresses going forward. Don’t tell personnel how to do their jobs, show them. Allow employees to branch out. Allow flexible hours. At the very least, you can avoid some toxicity in the workplace through such tactics.
